Appearance: Ling is tall for his age, running about 5'8" or 5'9". He is moderately muscled, but would be described as more lithe than anything else. His long black hair is kept in check by a white tie, which keeps it in a bushy ponytail. He has brown eyes, but you could never tell because of how he always seems to be squinting for some reason. Ling can also generally be found in what could be considered traditional Chinese clothing in colors ranging from a lighter brown to crimson or black.
Personality: Ling was born and raised a farmer's son, instilling in him an extremely strong work ethic, believing anything is possible if you work hard enough for it. He knows his place in society (he's near the bottom) but still wishes to make a name for himself somehow. He's fascinated by Western culture and technology after being exposed to it in Hongkong and wishes to find out all he can.
Despite the traditional Chinese upbringing, Ling is fairly open to new ideas of how to do things and readily takes advice if he believes it will help him towards whatever goal he happens to be moving towards. Outgoing, he has a tendency to just show up out of nowhere if something interests him and stick around with whoever or whatever does until he finds out everything he can about it.
Abilities/Strengths: Ling is quite skilled when it comes to building and taking apart machinery and can often be seen doing such in his spare time. He is always experimenting and will normally try to complete a project before starting a new one. He also knows the basics of martial arts and sword fighting from defending the family farm.

Weaknesses: Despite knowing the basics of self defense, that's all he knows -- the basics. When faced with someone of greater skill, his first thought is to run away in order to protect himself. Ling is also very obsessive with those he finds interesting, to point of being something of an annoyance and he doesn't even realize it. His curiosity is insatiable and possibly one of his largest weak points. If something even remotely catches his attention, he'll want to investigate. Inversely, if something fails to catch his interest (which is a rarity, but it happens), he'll simply leave it be.
History: Ling was born in the Yunnan province of China on June 12, 1906 according to the European calendar, the only son and eldest of two children, his younger sister being born in 1910. His parents were rice farmers and as such, he was put to work in the fields at a young age. While working on the farm, he learned the basics of protecting himself and learned how to handle a knife/sword, but nothing tremendously fancy. Life was fairly quiet for the family, despite the change of government in 1912. His village was small and out of the way on the banks of the Pearl River, so while they got news fairly regularly, they weren't important enough to really be bothered by the big wigs running the country.
When Ling was fourteen, his parents decided to move the family to Hongkong due to several years of crop failure for the family. While in Hongkong, Ling was first exposed to Western culture and immediately took to wanting to find out more and more about it as he found it fascinating. His parents were less than thrilled at this and encouraged him to merely stay with what he knew and take over the farm once his father was too old to work. Ling merely contented himself with listening to the English merchants that were in port for three years, all the while planning to find an opening and see the world and learning some English from said merchants. That chance came in 1923 when he found a merchant who was looking for crewmen to go on a voyage to Germany. He decided then and there to take the job and ran away from home the night the ship was due to depart.
